First Baptist Church, 305 W. Michigan Ave.
This handsome Romanesque church was erected in 1850-51 and is the oldest church edifice in the city. The beautiful brick walls and rounded-arch stained glass windows are highlighted by colorful perennials, rose bushes, spiraea bushes, and hosta that grace the exterior of the building.
Gardener: Connie Bosserd
First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Mansion St.
The Tranquility Garden was created in 2024. It is located behind the church on what for many years was the playground for the children attending the Presbyterian Center for Children. A member of the church had a vision for the area to become a serene space, free from the demands of social media and the hustle and bustle of daily life; a place where one could unwind and find a calm oasis.
Gardener: Phyllis Rabbideau
St. Mary Catholic Church, 212 W. Hanover St.
When the parish was founded in 1852 it was part of the Archdiocese of Detroit. One of the front windows in the church was donated by Bishop Gallagher of Detroit. Father Peter A. Baart came to Marshall in 1889 and opened a new school in 1883, reorganized the Altar Society, and is responsible for building the present church structure. It was dedicated on October 27, 1889. Enjoy the tranquil inner garden behind the church Rectory.
Gardeners: Nancy McDonald and Karen Mestemaker
Trinity Episcopal Church, 101 E. Mansion St.
The first services of Trinity Parish were held in 1836 in a Marshall log schoolhouse. In 1861, the cornerstone of the present Gothic Revival building utilizing native sandstone was laid, with Gordon W. Lloyd as the architect and Nathan Benedict of Marshall as the builder. Despite delays caused by the Civil War and inflation, the building was consecrated in 1864. Flower gardens have always surrounded the Trinity Parish and over the years have featured Biblical herbs, perennials, and shrubs.
Gardeners: Mike and Karla Love
United Methodist Church, 721 US Highway 27 North
In 2023, the Marshall UMC committed to planting a communal companion garden using shared knowledge and volunteer labor, while supporting the values of environmental stewardship, generosity, hospitality, and teamwork. The goal was to also expand food insecurity initiatives and feed our neighbor’s fresh produce. We welcome children and garden enthusiasts to visit our Community Garden and our Memorial Garden.
