Monarch Butterfly Development and Life Span

Christmas Floral Show





Before we know it Valentine’s Day, Easter and other family events will arrive and we can learn some new ways to enhance the holidays at home through flowers. The Marshall Area Garden Club, Inc. is hosting the Harvester Flower Shop for a presentation  "Celebrate 2021 with Flowers"  on Tuesday, January 19 at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom. Long time MAGCI member, Amy Frentz, and her staff at the Harvester Flower Shop will present ideas in floral design, mechanics, and materials; including building spring bulb gardens. Amy graduated from Northwood Institute with a major in Interior Design and is the owner of The Harvester Flower Shop. “Evolution of the Marshall Area Farmer’s Market” Marshall Area Farmer’s Market director, Pam Wolfersberger, will share the history of the market since its inception in 2003. Pam will introduce current market vendors and advisory board members to share their stories. She is a member of the Michigan Farmer’s Market Association and a Registered Nurse Anesthetist with a Master’s Degree in Anesthesia. She developed her passion for local food while traveling in Europe, seeing the locals going to market daily for fresh produce, meat and fish. Pam feels we should be aware of where our food comes from because of our health, environmental impact, and local economic growth.

Master Gardener and retired Consumer Horticulture Educator with MSU Extension, Linda Whitlock, will explore a variety of tasks that you can complete in your flower gardens, vegetable gardens, and lawn to help insure that they get off to the best possible start. ​Invasive Plant Species in Michigan

The Marshall Area Garden Club, Inc. and the Marshall Area District Library  offered an on-line program on “Invasive Plant Species in Michigan” on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 7 p.m.
Fallon Januska, Coordinator of Barry, Calhoun, Kalamazoo Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (BCK CISMA) will present the program. She grew up in Muskegon and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biology with an Aquatic Science Emphasis from Grand Valley State University. As an undergraduate she spent multiple summers working at Annis Water Resources Institute at Grand Valley. In 2016, she started with the Saginaw Bay CISMA as a member of the Strike Team and in January of 2017, she became the Coordinator of the Saginaw Bay CISMA. She started as our local CISMA Coordinator in August of 2018. She will talk about the benefits of natives vs. the detriments of invasive species and describe ways everyone can help prevent the spread of invasive plants. Fallon says, “Invasive species can teach us a lot about unintended consequences and the importance of identifying the upstream and downstream effects of our actions. Navigating through complex systems reminds us that there is still much more to know to better inform our decisions.”

Marshall Area Garden Club has announced its programs for the coming year.  The 2019 - 2020 monthly meetings end June 2020, with the garden tour set for July 11 and 12, 2020.  Funds raised from the tours help fund landscaping projects including the flower beds around the Fountain Circle.

A wide variety of subjects will be covered at the club's monthly meetings, held the third Tuesday of every month except December, July, and August.  All meetings will be held at the Marshall United Methodist Church.  The public is welcome to attend the club's meetings and encouraged to join.

2019 – 2020 Club Programs
 

September 17 - Tour of Bosserd Family Farm
14721 Verona Road, Marshall
6:30 p.m. - tour starts (before it gets too dark)
7:30 p.m. - meeting in the greenhouse

MAGCI member, Douglas Crane, will provide a tour of the family-owned and operated farm market and green house business which opened in 1996 by Pam and David Bosserd. Starting with the show gardens on Verona Road, to the beef barn, the flower cutting beds, the fall raspberry shrubs, the vegetable gardens, the gourd and pumpkin patch and finishing at the green house, Doug will share the history of the farm and his personal secrets for successful gardening.  Members are asked to wear comfortable shoes for walking on grassy and uneven ground and bring a lawn chair for the short business meeting.


October 15 - Know it before you Throw it
Sarah Kelly, Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator for Calhoun County


Sarah Kelly, the Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator for Calhoun County, has worked in the field of recycling since December 2013.  She is a member of the Southwest Michigan Solid Waste Consortium and also served two terms on the Michigan Recycling Coalition’s Board of Directors as their treasurer.  Sarah is responsible for the recycling centers located in Albion, Clarence Township, and Marshall, and she provides special collection events for appliances, electronics, household hazardous waste, polystyrene, and scrap tires.  Have you ever wondered what happens to your recycling after you drop it off or put it out at the curb?  Come learn how to “know it before you throw it” and see what you can do at home to make sure your recyclables get recycled.  Sarah will discuss current recycling issues including bag and straw bans along with all the market issues that have led communities to drop or reduce their recycling programs.           


November 19 - A Caring, Creative, Colorful Christmas - Floral Displays and Appetizer Social

Just in time for the holidays, MAGCI members will showcase their interpretive designs for you to enjoy. Program chair, Marlene Glotfelty is a National Garden Club Emeritus Flower Show Judge and award winning floral designer. Members may bring an appetizer item for the buffet. Drinks and tableware will be provided. Program starts at 7 p.m. as usual.


January 21, 2020 - Raising Chickens for Eggs
Marshall Chapter FFA members and Lora Finch, Agriscience Instructor and FFA Advisor

Learn the “ins and outs” of raising chickens.  The Marshall FFA winning demo poultry team: Harrison Hautau, Sara Horton, Emma Ruedisueli and James Ruedisueli won the State award at the Wharton Center in March of 2019 and will “egg-splain” everything we need to know. They also will give us an overview of FFA today and current trends in agriscience.


February 18 - Trends in Professional Floral Arrangements
Amy Frentz  and Bev Zalewski   
   
Long time MAGCI members Amy Frentz and Bev Zalewski will present the latest trends in floral design, mechanics, and materials.  From unique foliage to specialty tools, they will demonstrate tricks of the trade.  Amy graduated from Northwood Institute with a major in Interior Design, she is the owner of The Harvester Flower Shop.  Bev has a Fine Arts degree from Western Michigan University and certification from Hixson School of Floral Design; she opened The Harvester in 2000.




April 21 - Conserving our Wetlands - CANCELED
Dr. Larry Holcomb

As a professional biologist, Dr. Larry Holcomb taught university courses and performed research in Michigan, Ohio and Nebraska. Much research was on the reproduction in wild birds in the U.S., Eniwetok Atoll and Africa. He became more involved in chemical exposure to wildlife and humans while employed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Toxic Substance Control Commission and as the owner of Holcomb Environmental Services. Throughout his life he has continued to be a tree farmer and manages varied habitats for wildlife including tall grass prairie and wetlands.
